A study on the application of BIM-based design process in railway station
In the process of digitalizing core infrastructures of Social Overhead Capital (SOC) as a part of the Korean New Deal, the introduction of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to the smart SOC of railways has been receiving great attention for its strengths in the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings. Accordingly, the railway industry also strives to effectively organize and use BIM data through its “Railway BIM 2030 Roadmap” for each technology readiness level and apply and maintain sharing methods for the information. Since the current BIM for the railway infrastructure has been conducted only as pilot projects without any strategic approaches, however, it has been difficult to accumulate technologies and apply the target BIM level proposed by the Korea Railroad Research Institute.
It is also difficult to establish the maintenance plan that incorporates BIM-based orders for railway stations, performance products, and data management due to the absence of BIM guidelines on railway infrastructure design with information on assigned tasks, working environments, rules and regulations, and procedures of the ordering company, the design company, and the construction company.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to review preceding studies and similar cases on BIM, to investigate strengths and weaknesses of the current railway design process based on the analysis on the status and characteristics by using IDEFO (Icam DEFinition for Function Modeling), a process analysis tool, and to suggest a BIM-based design process customized to architectural stages of the railway station design.
The range of this study is limited to the design stage of the building life cycle, which was analyzed by examining the design process of railway stations through the IDEF0 modeling, a process analysis tool, investigating existing problems with the conventional design process of railway stations, and proposing a BIM-based design process.
